Alexander and Ulia
Alexander, a boy with a very masculine name that means “defender of man”, was defender of me, a little girl growing in his neighborhood. A little shy girl with an unusual name, who was afraid of her own shadow. Alexander was ten years older and he was patronizing me in a special way, like a little sister he didn’t have. It is no surprise that he was my hero and my love as long as I remembered myself. When I was eight and he was eighteen, Alexander was dating a beautiful woman, Ulia, several years older than himself. I extended my unselfish love to his girl-freind and she became a sample of feminism for me, a freckled ugly duckling. Especially I liked how Ulia smelled. They both were patronizing me, taking me with them to amusement parks, buying me ice-cream and playing parents to me.
Then my family moved far far away. I was too young to do anything about keeping the ties. I lost Alexander and Ulia for ever. I wonder sometimes what has become to them, if they stayed together and if they remembered me at all.
Smell can encode/decode our memories.
I grew up and from a freckled ugly duckling I transformed into a freckled redhead beauty. My shyness turned into calmness and self-sufficiency. From my books and Scrabble game I turned to sophisticated world of feminism. I didn’t use much of makeup, mostly I was just using some mascara for my sun bleaches eye lashes. My lips were so red that people were sure I was using lipstick which I never did.
But I became a perfume freak. I loved (and still do love) fragrances. I do not love so much flower sweet scents, as I think my own personality is more lined to musk, wood, amber, bitter fragrances, though slightly floral scent is fine too. I could spend hours smelling and testing fragrances in perfume stores.
Once on a plane I was sitting next to a woman who with all her look radiated self-assurance and class. She was wearing a fragrance that was fascinating, soft and yet daring, somewhat oriental and extremely feminine. It made me close my eyes, so familiar and yet unknown it was.
The sense of smell, like the sense of taste, is a chemical sense. Our "smell centers" are located just below our brains. Our brain interprets the impulses sent from airborne molecules received by our nose as smell. It is long known that the sense of smell is closely connected with memory and experience. It is very personal and our memories can be revived by sudden catch of smell with which those memories are coded.
When I closed my eyes and breezed the fragrance into my nostrills, my memory brought to me an almost forgotten image- Ulia! Ulia smelled exactly like this. No, the woman next to me was not Ulia, but she used the same perfume as Ulia used to wear. I stroke a conversation with the woman sitting next to me on the plane and found out that the perfume she used was Miss Dior by Christian Dior. No doubt that I found this perfume the same day in an airport duty-free store, bought it and since the age of 19 classical perfumes of Christian Dior are must on my list of perfumes.
Classic Christian Dior
Christian Dior (1905-1957), was an influential French fashion designer, couturier.
He is best known as the founder of one of the world's top fashion houses, also called Christian Dior.
His other universes were fragrances and jewelry.
Christian Dior began his perfume house in 1947 at the age of 30.
Christian Dior fragrances are the industry standard in quality and performance.
Christian Dior’s intricate and sophisticated fragrances are sexy and classic.
Their aromas are alluring, elegant and enigmatic.
The aromas that have been created under the Dior label have become classics in their own right.
Christian Dior perfumes are must on a list of gifts for a woman.
Miss Dior by Christian Dior is my favorite.
Christian Dior said, “I created this perfume to wrap each woman in exquisite femininity, as if each of my designs were emerging from the bottle one by one.” Born with the New Look in 1947, Miss Dior incarnates the signature of a great designer in the timeless elegance and refinement of a classic green chypre with galbanum and jasmine
FRAGRANCE DESCRIPTION
Green Floral Chypre The Couture Spirit
Top note: GALBANUM: The galbanum plant grows in Iran and Afghanistan. Its gum is collected through an incision made in the root, then distilled. The resulting essence complements green chypre and herbaceous harmonies. It lends a hint of impertinence to the top notes of Miss Dior.
Heart note: JASMINE: A symbol of feminine softness, jasmine is one of the most commonly used flowers in perfumery. Wonderfully delicate, it is an entire fragrance in itself. Jasmine is one of the heart notes of Miss Dior, the timeless dry-down of Diorissimo and the refreshing top note of Miss Dior Chérie eau de parfum.
Base note: PATCHOULI: Patchouli is a plant native to Indonesia and Malaysia. Indispensable to any perfumer, patchouli essence is obtained by steam distillation of the dried leaves. It is to be found in chypre, woody and oriental fragrances. This valued ingredient forms the dry-down of Miss Dior, Eau Fraîche, Dioressence, Eau de Dolce Vita, and the heart notes of Midnight Poison
Poison by Christian Dior
Some perfumes are born a myth. Poison is Dior’s ultimate weapon of seduction. Its exceptional, exotic alchemy is created by a rich blend of spicy, fruity and amber notes warmed by honey and musk - an unsettling, charismatic and oriental.
Top note: CORIANDER: Produced in Russia and distilled in water vapour, coriander is regarded as a herb and mainly used in cooking. Containing linalool, coriander brings a fresh, zesty, peppery quality to fougere, citrus and chypre fragrances. It reveals its mysterious, bewitching power in the top notes of Poison.
Heart note: TUBEROSE: Imported from India to Europe around 1600, the tuberose is a herbaceous plant bearing clusters of strongly scented white flowers. In the heart notes of Poison, tuberose has overtones of fruit and jasmine. In Miss Dior Chérie extract, Indian tuberose absolute is a very heady floral note with accents of honey and orange, lending a noble, luxurious intensity.
Base note: OPOPONAX: myrrh or gum resin that oozes from the bark of a tree found in Africa and the Middle East. The velvety, balsamic scent of opoponax forms the bewitching, mysterious dry-down of Poison

Christian Dior for Men (we should not forget about men!)
Dior Homme- This fragrance blends tradition and modernity, in the spirit of the house of Dior. Its fragrance take on the iris – a rare note in men’s perfumery - in a precise, pared-down formula. The result is a powdery woody floral, luxurious and resolutely masculine : a new generation classic.
